Juan Garcia Esquivel
[Born 20 January 1918, Tampico, México] [Died 3 January 2002, Jiutepec, Morelos, México]
Mexican composer and orchestra
leader Juan Garcia Esquivel is well remember today for his space-age bachelor pad music. Esquivel recorded for RCA
from 1957 to 1968.His arrangements took full advantage of the stereo phenomenon. The music made hi-fi's resonate with bongos,
glass-shattering brass, and perky xylophones. He stripped lyrics from pop standards and replaced them with whistling, humming,
or a disjointed phrase. His smooth vocal choruses would croon "Zu-zu-zu", or shout "Pow! Pow! Pow!" As one producer put it,
"Esquivel is one arranger who really writes for stereophonic sound." He led the live band for 12 years, but
by the end, his audience had begun to dwindle, and his indulgence in drink and drugs led to the end of his contract. His belongings,
including many of his compositions, were hauled off when he fell in arrears on his rent. In 1979, he returned to México and
composed for a children's series called "Burbujas". An album of songs and instrumentals from the series sold more than a million
copies. Esquivel's experimental recordings of the 1950s and '60s regained popularity during the revival
of lounge music in the 1990s. His albums include Other Worlds, Other Sounds, Exploring New Sounds in Stereo, Four Corners
of the World, Strings Aflame, Infinity in Sound, More of Other Worlds, Other Sounds, 1968 Esquivel!, Burbujas and Odisea
Burbujas.
