Piet Mondrian

[Neo-Plasticist Painter, 1872-1944]

Dutch painter, who carried abstraction to its furthest limits. Through radical simplification of composition and color, he sought to expose the basic principles that underlie all appearances. He is regarded by many as the founder of abstract art. By the 1950's, his easily identifiable style had become so famous that for many it is a symbol of modern art. Mondrian believed that "art systematically eliminates the world of nature and man." He wanted art to be as mathematical as possible, a "blueprint for an organized life." Mondrian based his style on lines and rectangles. He theorized that straight lines do not exist in nature, so he decided to use only straight lines to create an art of "harmony and order" which he believed were missing from a world torn by the conflict of World War I.
